Hello Orchestra Students and Families,
My name is Kathleen Smith and I am the director of middle school orchestras in the Corvallis School District.
Joining the orchestra program is very exciting and there's a lot of information.
Corvallis Premier & Chamber Orchestras are open to all Corvallis area middle school string musicians with at least 1 year of experience on their instrument.
Both the Premier and Chamber Orchestras will meet in the Linus Pauling Orchestra room. The orchestras are taught as magnet classes including musicians from Cheldelin, Franklin, Zion and Linus Pauling Middle Schools. In addition, Premier and Chamber Orchestra welcomes home-schooled students. Please be sure to register for orchestra with Linus Pauling Middle School if you attend any of the above schools except Cheldelin. If you attend Cheldelin, please register through Cheldelin. All grades are represented in both orchestras.
Premier Orchestra meets on Monday and Wednesday mornings 7:30AM – 8:25AM and every 1st and 3rd Friday. If you are entering the 6th grade, you should consider yourself a member of the Premiere Orchestra. Students entering the 7th grade are automatically accepted into the Premier Orchestra and are welcome and encouraged to audition for the Chamber Orchestra. Students will be placed in the appropriate group based on their ability and group instrumentation.
Chamber Orchestra is an auditioned group. If you were in Chamber Orchestra as a 7th grade student, you are automatically invited to participate in the Chamber Orchestra for your 8th grade year. This orchestra meets on Tuesday and Thursday mornings 7:30-8:25AM and every 2nd and 4th Friday.
In the case of a 5th Friday, notification will be sent home well ahead of time informing you which orchestra will meet.
If you wish to audition to perform with the Chamber Orchestra, please click here and follow the directions.
As this is an academic class, grades are given and your commitment and regular attendance is required. At the conclusion of rehearsal, Corvallis School District Bus Transportation will be provided to all students to return to their resident school to continue their scheduled classes. Franklin students do have a bit of time taken out of their first period. It is highly recommended you keep up with your studies and work closely with your teacher so you will remain in good standing in your classes.
If you are in 6th grade and enrolled in the Premier Orchestra you are required to take part in your 6th grade orchestra at your school. 6th Grade Orchestra is offered at Cheldelin and Linus Pauling on Monday and Wednesdays during your XLT time. Sadly, we are currently unable to offer a 6th grade orchestra at Franklin and this requirement is waived for those students. - This information may change before the 2017/18 school year.
We have some school instruments (celli and bass) that are available for student use while at school, however bringing your own cello is highly encouraged.
There is NO cost to participate in your middle school orchestras. This is a part of your regular school day.
Our first class will be with the Premier Orchestra meeting on Monday, September 11th at 7:30AM. I will have the door to the outside of the orchestra room open – please enter here. The orchestra room is located on the south east side of Linus Pauling near the main entrance. I will have the outside door open.
Chamber Orchestra will begin Tuesday, September 12th at 7:30AM.
